CAN YOU SEE A HYGIENIST WITHOUT SEEING A DENTIST?
Yes, we can see patients without the need to see a dentist first. As Registered Dental Hygienists, we are licensed oral health professionals who can provide a variety of services, including teeth cleaning, oral exams, and dental x-rays. We are also trained to recognize oral health issues that may need to be referred to a dentist for further evaluation and treatment. In some cases, a dentist may need to evaluate a patient before allowing us to proceed with certain procedures, such as deep cleaning, scaling and root planning. If you’re not sure – contact us and we will refer to a dentist in your area.
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE STERILIZED AND SAFE FOR USE?
We follow strict sterilization protocols to ensure that our equipment and materials are clean and safe for use. This includes using recommended hospital-grade disinfectants, following the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and sterilizing instruments, and regularly checking and maintaining our equipment to ensure that it is in good working order.

We also take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our patients during the appointment.

WHAT IS DENTAL HYGIENE
Dental hygiene refers to the practice of maintaining oral health and preventing dental problems through various procedures such as teeth cleaning, gum care, and oral health education.
WHY IS DENTAL HYGIENE IMPORTANT?
Dental hygiene is vital for maintaining overall oral health. Regular dental hygiene services help prevent dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath, and can contribute to better overall health.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A DENTAL HYGIENE APPOINTMENT?
During a dental hygiene appointment, the hygienist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, remove plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and provide oral hygiene instructions tailored to your needs.
CAN A DENTAL HYGIENIST DIAGNOSE DENTAL PROBLEMS?
At our clinic if we come across any findings that require any treatment we will let you know and refer you back to your dentist for treatment. If you do not have one we can recommend one.
WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS AS A PATIENT?

This document outlines the rights of individuals when receiving dental hygiene care and provides insights into what can be expected from dental hygienists. Familiarizing yourself with these rights empowers you to make informed decisions regarding your oral health and well-being.

WHO GOVERNS DENTAL HYGIENISTS?
In Alberta, Canada, dental hygienists are governed by the The Alberta College of Dental Hygienists (ACDH). The ACDH is the regulatory body responsible for ensuring the competency, professionalism, and ethical standards of dental hygienists practicing in the province. It sets and enforces standards of practice, handles registration and licensure, and promotes ongoing professional development for dental hygienists in Alberta.
In Newfoundland, a similar body called the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Dental Hygienists (NLCDH) is the main regulatory body.
